Firefox hanging on startup ( linux ) -> disable extension updates, switchproxy
Using strace and lsof, finally figured it was
switchproxy, but I suspect any other extension may have the same effect.
Make sure you disable updates on startup - they seem to happen in the main thread, and if the site is down or your network
is funny, it'll appear as hunged. On X11 it's even more interesting - sometimes if you click a menu it'll 'eat' your mouse ( workaround:
switch to a text terminal and kill firefox ).
If you already installed it - stop the network device, so it'll fail fast ( ifdown ethX ), then go to Extensions, options, and disaple
the update.
Same thing reported here ( too bad seaching for 'firefox hang' didn't find too much, I only found the page after finding the problem):

Disabled due to spam. Click on the link to post a comment, it'll be sent in email ( and thus usual mail spam filters and blacklist applied ). It may be made accessible later on, but code needs to be written for that.
